Tiffany Gholar, AB'01 General Studies in the Humanities (Art/Film/Creative Writing)

Photographer, Painter, Author

Describe your current artistic endeavors.
I just finished a photography project that I worked on for six years, from 2008 to 2014. I took digital photographs using Barbie dolls to explore issues of body image and impossible beauty standards. I published a book of the photos last year in The Doll Project, as well as a book about my paintings called Imperfect Things. While I was in graduate school, I started working with found objects, especially recyclables like cardboard, in my paintings. I call my style Post-Consumerism. In addition to continuing to paint, I am also preparing to publish my first novel.

How did your UChicago experience shape your artistic pursuits?
Being in Bob Hooper's painting class freed me to explore abstract painting. I began working in a style that I am still building upon today.

Have you tapped into the alumni network at any point since you've graduated and if so, in what way?
I am just starting to become more active with the alumni network. I'm very excited about the Arts Alumni group.

What advice do you have for other Arts Alumni who are looking to do what you do?
It can be very difficult and discouraging at times facing the challenges of being an emerging artist. Being part of art communities can be very helpful. I am very grateful to the members of the art groups I'm a part of for all the support and resources they've provided.
